Hong Kong asset management licensing, SFC Type 9
Hong Kong asset management runs on the Securities and Futures Commission licensing regime, where Type 9 covers asset management, and it remains the primary gateway for managers whose strategy is built around Greater China. The domestic fund vehicle regime was modernised specifically to keep structures onshore.
The regulator
The Securities and Futures Commission is a rigorous supervisor with prescriptive competence requirements for responsible officers and a detailed conduct framework. It expects the individuals named on the licence to genuinely run the business.
What the licence permits
Regulated under the SFC
- Provide asset management services under a Type 9 licence
- Manage Hong Kong open-ended fund company structures
- Access mainland China connectivity from an offshore base
- Operate in an English common law jurisdiction within Asia
Who it suits
Managers running Greater China strategies, and firms whose investor base is Asian institutional or Hong Kong private wealth.
Market access
Access to Hong Kong investors and mainland connectivity schemes. Other Asian markets license separately.
What to weigh
Responsible officer requirements are demanding and the competition for qualified individuals is intense. Managers should confirm they can staff the roles before committing to the jurisdiction.
