Austrian e-money and payment institution licensing (FMA)

Austria offers an EU payments permission from a stable, conservative jurisdiction that has long served as a commercial bridge into Central and Eastern Europe. It is a smaller market than its neighbours, which for the right firm means a supervisor with capacity to engage properly rather than a queue.

The regulator

The Finanzmarktaufsicht supervises payment and e-money institutions alongside the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, and it applies EU requirements without much appetite for creative interpretation. Governance and fitness of management receive close attention relative to the size of the firm.

What the licence permits

Regulated under the FMA

  • Issue electronic money to Austrian and EEA customers
  • Execute transfers and issue cards and other payment instruments
  • Provide account information and payment initiation services
  • Passport into the EEA, including neighbouring CEE markets

Who it suits

Firms with Central and Eastern European ambitions that want a Western European supervisor, and groups that value a smaller regulator with real engagement.

Market access

Full EEA passporting from a jurisdiction with established commercial links across the CEE region.

What to weigh

The domestic market is modest, so Austria works as a passporting base rather than as a growth market in itself. Expect German-language supervision and firm expectations on local substance.

We run the Austria application end to end

Whether you build from new or acquire an existing licensed entity, BrokLicense handles incorporation, the regulator application, the AML and compliance framework, safeguarding and banking arrangements, and the operating stack. You stay the principal. We do the work, in confidence, and stay on for compliance once you are live.

Cost, capital, and timelines depend on your model and are set out in a first consultation, under NDA, not published here.

Discuss your mandate in confidence

Every engagement begins under a mutual NDA. Set out the firm you intend to operate and the timeline you are working to, and you leave the first consultation with a recommended jurisdiction, the route to the licence, and a defined scope of work.
