Austrian fund and asset management authorisation (FMA)
Austria offers a conservative, stable EU base for fund and asset management with long-standing commercial links across Central and Eastern Europe. It is a jurisdiction where a mid-sized manager can hold a real supervisory relationship rather than a queue number.
The regulator
The Finanzmarktaufsicht authorises and supervises fund managers and asset managers under the Austrian implementation of the EU framework. It applies requirements straightforwardly and pays close attention to the qualification of the individuals running the strategy.
What the licence permits
Regulated under the FMA
- Manage alternative investment funds from Austria
- Provide discretionary portfolio management to clients
- Serve investors across the CEE region from a Western European base
- Passport management and marketing into every EEA state
Who it suits
Managers with a Central and Eastern European strategy or investor base who want a Western European supervisor behind them.
Market access
EEA passporting for management and marketing, from a jurisdiction with established regional reach.
What to weigh
The domestic capital pool is modest, so Austria works as a regional base rather than as a fundraising market in its own right. German-language supervision applies.
