Cyprus AIFM and fund manager authorisation (CySEC)
Cyprus has become a practical EU home for emerging managers, pairing a full alternative investment fund manager regime with lighter sub-threshold routes and a range of domestic fund vehicles. English is the working language of the professional sector, and the cost base sits well below Western Europe.
The regulator
The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission supervises both investment firms and fund managers, so a group running both deals with one authority. It has become considerably more demanding on substance and governance as the sector has grown.
What the licence permits
Regulated under the CySEC
- Manage alternative investment funds under full or sub-threshold authorisation
- Provide discretionary portfolio management where separately authorised
- Establish Cypriot fund vehicles including registered alternative funds
- Passport management and marketing across the EEA once fully authorised
Who it suits
First-time and mid-sized managers who want EU credentials, English-language administration, and a cost base that lets a smaller fund work.
Market access
Full EEA passporting on full authorisation, with national private placement for sub-threshold managers.
What to weigh
Sub-threshold status is a genuine saving and a genuine limitation, because the marketing passport does not come with it. Plan the conversion before fundraising demands it rather than after.
We run the Cyprus application end to end
Whether you build from new or acquire an existing licensed entity, BrokLicense handles incorporation, the regulator application, the AML and compliance framework, safeguarding and banking arrangements, and the operating stack. You stay the principal. We do the work, in confidence, and stay on for compliance once you are live.
Cost, capital, and timelines depend on your model and are set out in a first consultation, under NDA, not published here.
